Lots of people today are switching to renewable sources of energy, such as home windmills.
With regular electricity sources being either under threat,or causing environmental damage, renewable energy resources are becoming more common. This really is occuring not only in the highest tier, that of state or national government or big electrical power corporations, but additionally at the individual householder level with more and more individuals finding ways to generate their own power.
Many individuals are considerably decreasing their electric power charges or even living entirely off-grid by means of generating their own electrical power. One particular prospective electricity supply that can be very easily harnessed, and is also totally replenishable, is wind energy. In this write-up we take a look into 3 factors you truly must know about home windmills.
1) Home windmills are not complicated machines.
In the 1800s it was learned that electricity and magnetism, rather than being two entirely different things, were really distinct types of the exact same elementary phenomenon, now called electromagnetism. Exactly what had been found out, quite basically, was that you are able to use magnets to generate power, or alternatively you can use electricity to push magnets.
A wind mill, or more accurately a wind turbine, is in reality precisely the reverse of a cooling fan. A fan uses electrical energy to power a motor, which then turns the fan blades, which in turn create wind flow. Conversely, a wind mill employs wind to move the blades, that are connected to the electrical generator which produces the electrical energy.
Electrical motors and generators are essentially simply two means of making use of the laws of electromagnetism to utilise electrical energy. A motor creates motion from electrical power while a generator produces electrical energy from movement.
Without going into this overly deeply, simply comprehend that electrical motors and generators are basic gadgets, which require only a magnet and an electricity conductor to operate. As long as either the magnet or the electrical conductor can move, electric current can be utilized to create movement, or movement used to produce electricity.
These days you are able to acquire a lot of devices such as flashlights that are able to be be powered-up by turning a dial, or a hand-powered battery charger. Yet more instances of the generator turning motion into electric power.
2) Decreasing your energy expenses or possibly even existing off-grid is completely doable
Because wind turbines are so simple in design, many people have erected their own home windmills to lower their energy costs. Whilst just one wind turbine alone may not be sufficient to completely ensure electric power when required, it really is feasible to combine your wind turbine together with other sources of power generation such as solar panels to almost ensure that you have power 24/7.
But you do not have to go totally off-grid or combine your home windmills with solar panels at all. If you’re just seeking to reduce your power bill you are able to make a excellent start with a home windmill. You’ll find reports of families chopping their energy costs by up to 80% with just a single home windmill.
3) Home Windmills do not need to set you back thousands or tens of thousands of dollars
Home windmills do not need to cost you a great deal of hard earned cash. Although it is possible to invest in pre-packaged and completely installed wind turbines for big money this is not mandatory.
As discussed previously the workings of wind powered generator are straightforward, and it is just a matter of finding the correct materials and knowing how to put them together.
Using the right know-how basic home wind power generators could be built for a couple of hundred bucks. The financial savings you make out of your very first windmill may then be utilized to improve your system till you are able to completely go off the power grid, if that is what you want to do.

Thousands of people need to go green. If this consists of you, do you know you possibly can actually get monetary savings as you permit a lighter carbon footprint on the setting? There are many strategies of doing this, from getting “off the grid” and using solar and wind energy, to simply decreasing the amount of energy you use by turning off lights and unplugging home equipment equivalent to TVs and DVD players when they aren’t in use. One of many extra vital methods which you can go inexperienced whereas saving cash is putting in a solar water heating system. Utilizing solar energy to warm your water can scale back your fossil fuel energy consumption by as much as 32% and be an essential first step in the direction of upgrading your home to be extra environmentally friendly.
How do solar water heaters work? As compared with other methods of solar energy technology, solar panels work otherwise than photo voltaic water heaters. Photo voltaic panels primarily use photovoltaics (PVs), that are arrays of cells that comprises supplies which convert photo voltaic radiation into direct present electricity. Nevertheless, water solar energy heaters use a simpler methodology of using solar vitality to produce warm water. They use solar thermal collectors to seize power from the sun. Everybody knows that when they wear darkish clothes on a sunny day, they tend to really feel hotter within the sun. This is because black materials are extra absorptive of sunlight, whereas lighter colored surfaces mirror the sun’s light. In the same method, solar water heating programs capture power from the solar by cycling fluids through black colored tubing. This dark colored tubing captures thermal power from the sun and warms the fluid. The nice and cozy water then circulates via the tubing and into your home. Typically a reservoir is hooked up to the nice and cozy water system to conserve warmth by way of evening hours when the sun doesn’t shine.
Solar power water heaters rarely can present sufficient warmth to sustain scorching water by means of an entire day, as the sun just isn’t at all times shining. Due to this fact, photo voltaic water heaters are often supplemented with different sorts of water heating. While this can embrace the standard fuel or electrical water heater, many homeowners get creative and use greener methods of supplementing their sizzling water heater system. One example of this is able to be using the heat generated by way of a hearth, where the same sorts of tubing that circulate by photo voltaic thermal collectors are run in shut proximity to the warmth of the fireside, or by means of the chimney. One other creative method to complement photo voltaic water heaters includes the heat generated from the again of air conditioners.
It is important to observe that solar water heaters aren’t for all climates. In northern climates, weather circumstances should not favorable to operate a solar power system to heat water for part of the year. Wherever situations might result in the freezing of water outdoors, your solar thermal collector or the tubes between the collector and your scorching water system must be emptied of fluids. Most areas the place this is able to occur have seasonal periods that are useful for utilizing solar water heating. During seasons where freezing would occur, you could drain the fluids from the tubing. This is because liquid expands when it freezes, and would burst the tubes and other very important components of your solar heater system.
What are the advantages of a DIY photo voltaic water heater? The acknowledged purpose of this text is to both aid you cut back the dimensions of your ecological footprint, as well as aid you to avoid wasting money. In keeping with the purpose of saving money, try to be conscious that there are “do it yourself”, or DIY photo voltaic water heater kits that won’t solely scale back your monthly energy invoice, they’re cheaper to install.
While professionally installed solar techniques to heat your water may value upwards of $seven-hundred, you’ll be able to construct your own photo voltaic water heater for lower than $100. When you’ve got checked out putting in solar panels earlier than, remember that building a DIY solar water heater is way more simple. Whereas a solar panel can require purchasing expensive fragile components and soldering them together, solar water heaters are by comparability far simpler to assemble. This is because all the parts you need can be found at your local hardware store.

Green funerals or green burials are growing rapidly in popularity with many people wanting an eco sustainable funeral reflective of how their own values towards the environment. Green burials offer an ecologically sensitive alternative to the wasteful and expensive traditional funeral. The typical overall cost for a traditional funeral in the US is on average $6500. The green alternative is much lower in costs with the average being only $2300.
The amount of non renewable resources buried with the dead is beyond belief. Last year, 30 million feet of wood were used in caskets; another 90,272 tons of steel used for the same purpose. 14,000 additional tons of steel were used in the construction of burial vaults as well as 1.6 million tons of concrete; and 2700 tons of copper (a rapidly dwindling global supply) were also used for caskets. Finally to embalm everyone who died last year in the US, 872,060 gallons of embalming fluid were dumped into the ground.
A green funeral seeks to offer a better way of not polluting the environment while at the same time honoring the dead with a living tribute in their name. A eco friendly burial is one where the body is interred without being embalmed or being placed in a concrete vault. A plain wooden casket is used but the choice of a cardboard coffin or one made out of bamboo, wicker or bamboo is available. The coffin is buried in a shallow grave in a special location identifiable by GPS coordinates. The only marker is not a granite headstone but a tree that will be sustained by the body of the deceased.
Green funerals usually take place in conservation areas such as woodlands or forests in the process of restoration and conservation. Woodland burials are growing in popularity and green cemeteries are doubling every year to the demand from ecologically aware consumers. The Green Burial Council is an American non profit organization that is a clearinghouse of information on green funerals.
The Council aims to promotes green burials as a way of conserving natural areas in the US by informing people about the alternatives to traditional funerals. It offers a list of states that permit green burials as well as listing listing states that have green cemeteries.
Searching on the Internet for sustainable funeral services and products can turn up web sellers offering bio degradable caskets, funeral shrouds and even hollowed out gourds for cremations.
Before you plan an ecologically sound funeral, check with the laws of your state to see if they permit green burials. Remember not all states will permit these types of burials.
If your state does allow green burials, then how do you know that your final resting place will be a green one? A green cemetery should follow a number of rules and practices to ensure the viability of a woodland grave site. It should have an established conservation organization or committee to oversee and administer the area. All areas in the cemetery should have had a geological, hydrological and geographical survey done. How are the graves dug, by hand or backhoe? The accepted way is by a shallow hand dug grave. How will the graves be marked and located? These are the questions that will have to be researched further before ecologically sustainable funerals can be planned.
Eco friendly funerals, next to donating organs, are the greatest gift to the families of the deceased. It teaches that death is a part of life, nothing to be afraid of or glossed over with euphemisms, cosmetics or chemicals. The dead can continue to contribute to nature by becoming a part of the soil, the trees, the grass and the flowers.

The ideas of living green, and self sustainable living, have grown tremendously in the last several years. Consumers are paying more attention to the things they purchase, and businesses have been modifying both their merchandise, and the way they do business, in an effort to cash in on a more organic minded economy.
The problem many of us have, is trying to figure out if the product we want to buy is actually an earth friendly product, or just some shiny, fancy label the manufacturer put on the package to make us believe it is green. So what can one do? No one has the time to take numerous hours investigating products before buying them. This is made even more difficult due to the fact that many businesses these days do not offer a brick and mortar store that you can go to. Just about everything is done online these days, even our shopping.
There are currently multiple agencies that research products and determine just how earth friendly they really are. Most companies, that are making a honest attempt to make more eco-friendly products, will go through a very long and difficult process involving many organizations, including a third party certification. The typical reason for the third party certification is to make sure that the certification is obtained by a agency without financial interest in the success of the product or the producer.
Green Seal is one of the largest eco labeling agencies operating today. This non-profit has been in business since 1989, and looks at the whole life cycle of a product before determining its certification. Their standards have been developed using EPA and ISO criteria as well as public input and third part certification. They have a very lengthy process, but if a product boasts this seal, you can be quite sure it is an earth friendly product.
GreenBlue does not declare products as green. They actually offer manufacturers, an elaborate database that lists information on ?green formula ingredients?. They help the manufacturer in determining the correct combination of pure ingredients for the results they want to achieve. Most of the information in the database is third party certified, so you and the manufacturer can be certain that the item is earth friendly.
The Green Label program was implemented by the Carpet and Rug Institute in 1992. They began adding vacuum cleaners to the items that they test in 2000. Vacuum cleaners are tested for dirt extraction, dust confinement, and fabric retention. Their primary focus is air quality. Any vacuum with this label is deemed to be environmentally friendly.
EcoLogo, originally formed in Canada, certifies products in nearly 200 categories. They also base their determination on the full life cycle of the product, and consider several aspects of the product. Their criteria is reviewed every few years so that they can stay up to date on new scientific developments.
These are just the tip of the iceberg. There are many other agencies and organizations that certify products, ingredients, and companies as green, organic, or earth friendly. In short, if you are able to locate a certification by a legitimate agency then you can be sure that the item you are buying is in fact environmentally friendly, and not some sad marketing ploy.

Because of the depletion of non-renewable sources from the earth, individuals are exploring extra ways to make use of natural and renewable energy sources. Allow us to take a close look at the advantages and drawbacks of inexperienced energy.
The largest benefit is that the renewable power sources are limitless and so they can be utilized for thousands and thousands of years. On the other hand the non-renewable sources are limited as they’re contained in a reserved amount under earth?s surface.
There are certain countries that are using renewable sources to generate electricity. This has brought growth and employment has increased. Other than the financial benefit is great. There generally is a enhance in the tourism trade if the world which is benefitting from the green power is constantly getting provided by electricity.
As pure energy depends on weather situation, it is troublesome to predict how a lot might be generated on a given day. But you may at all times store the excess vitality in the batteries when the climate is beneficial, so that you use it when the climate shouldn’t be suitable.
Did you know that wind power is one of the oldest vitality sources? Its conversion was used to propel the boats in historic times. Presently wind is used largely to generate electrical energy and is one of the most potent renewable power sources. Wind energy will never pollute the surroundings and will not have any impression on the climatic changes. So as to add to this, 1 MW wind turbine will save roughly 2,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year. The wind energy is on the market abundantly and magnets 4 energy it is 5 times more than the world?s energy consumption.
One more advantage of wind and solar energy is that almost anybody could make equipment that can generate electrical energy using these sources. You can also make sufficient vitality to meet the demand of your home. It doesn?t require having a genius thoughts to make a wind turbine or a solar panel. There’s plenty of info offered on the net to guide you to make your own magniwork power generator facility. If you have your personal wind turbine, you won?t have to worry about the power cuts. The wind energy sector and solar power sector are becoming extraordinarily value efficient with numerous researches being carried out so as to cut the installation price and enhance the effectivity of the facility.
There are a number of international locations which have wind power farms or solar power farms. They not only generate good amount of electricity, however they’re off the grid. As a matter of truth a few of them are supplying electricity to their native grids.
You can assemble your own wind turbine or a photo voltaic panel in lower than $200. There are lots of guides which can assist you easily.

It is impotent to consider manage and change the situation. We must always obtain the respite from high utility bills. In the event you have no idea how you can audit you should read first the attached guide to getting a general overview. Performing a DIY energy audit through the home must be incorporated into your yearly checklist, on the list of tasks you should do preparing to winter cold days.
Knowing how to conduct an energy audit is very important because there could be countless tiny places where your house is losing heat. However, once added up, it could considerably increase, and you might be losing a lot of heat.
After quick learning how to conduct an energy audit, you are able to quickly and efficiently identify the areas that need addressed previous to the snow will come.
1. Blower Door Test
Find drafts coming from the areas like windows and doors that lead towards the outside. A burning up incense stick is a good draft locator. It is very useful for hard to get drafts where the smoke will toss and turn under the slightest breeze.
It’s time to clean the old wear and re caulk the windows. Windows in bad shape may have to be replaced when ever you will have the money for it. Check also the doors leaks, are they closed tight or have cracks around?
You can find in most hardware stores a selection of inexpensive weather stripping, easy to set up, that can help you keep the cold out. Recheck how the doors are sealed with an incense stick.
2. Thermal Analysis Test
Check for drafts around electrical outlets and switches. If the walls around them aren’t insulated properly there might be some major heat loss. Changing some of the gaskets and installing them at the back of the covers can reduce air flow.
3. Duct Leakage Test
Check the attic hatch and re-insulate it. Heat inside the house is rising and will exit through the open hatch.
4. Efficiency & Safety Test
The baseboards are one more place to look for air drafts. Look for a little gap between the underside of the floor and the drywall. The gaps might be filled with caulk.
5. Moisture Evaluation Test
Fireplace louvers should function properly much heat can get away from your home by not creating a louvered dryer vent to complete his work.
6. The Final Report
Around a wall air conditioner, it can be another place domed to air leaks. Best things to do are to seal the leaks with caulk.
7. Implementing The Solutions
This really is time to maneuver towards the outside of your house:

Recycling Industrial Batteries
June 28, 2010 by ftsword37

It is vitally important that humanity adjusts their behavior in order to live in harmony with the environment. Leaving behind an ecosystem that operates properly for future generations is only possible if everyone does his part. Many businesses, however, are not doing theirs. We can only succeed in keeping the planet green if they are on board. If the actions of businesses do not match those of the citizens, it is counterproductive and no progress can be made. There are several environmental hazards with which businesses tend to be rather careless, but they are particularly casual when it comes to industrial batteries. Materials such as lead, sulfuric acid, cadmium, and alkaline electrolytes are found in these batteries and can damage the environment irreparably if simply thrown out. Proper disposal is required in order to prevent adverse effects to the planet. Measures have been taken to ensure that businesses process their waste properly. Laws are in place that require businesses to take responsibility for their waste products. Once an industrial battery has been used up, it needs to be taken to a qualified disposal facility because the highly toxic materials found within are categorized as industrial waste. Many businesses must take the used batteries to professional processors and regionally approved handlers because they do not often have adequate processing facilities on site. Once a battery is used, it must be taken to a plant that is qualified to handle it in order to diminish any harm that might come to the environment. Following are the legal measures required of companies that utilize industrial batteries:
- A person qualified in handling industrial waste must be designated to do so.
- You must find a specialist subcontractor to collect and transport your used industrial batteries.
- Accurate records must be maintained regarding the number of batteries purchased and used. This data must be provided to the subcontractor.
Performing these duties is not an option. It is a legal requirement. Large fines are handed down to companies found noncompliant with the legal mandates enforced by the nation. Additionally, fines are not the only financial hardship a business faces if they choose to break the law. Imagine the public relations headache such a company would face. In a world in which it is more important than ever to go green, potential customers and businesses tend to shy away from a business that appears as if they do not care about the environment.
Going Green One Step At A Time

Being green and eco-friendly is all the rage these days. Just open any newspaper or magazine and you will find articles and ads mentioning “going green” or refering to green products. Going green is not a fad. It’s here to stay. Is going green hard to do? Going green is not hard at all when taken step by step. In this article we are going to give you some simple and cost cutting steps to take in order start going green.
There are many things you can do to save money and be “eco-friendly” at the same time. The first place to apply green technology in the home is in electricity. Take a good look at your electricity bills and think about how nice it would be if you no longer had to pay them. You could save thousands! Think also about what it takes to deliver that electricity to your home.
Your power utility most likely operates on fossil fuels, and
then it has to send that electricity miles and miles through transmission lines, semi-conductors, transformers, etc. The oil and coal burned to bring you that electricity are what polutes the enviornment.
Now Im no “tree hugger” or enviornmentalist, but I am for clean air and water. I also like the idea of not buying billions of dollars of oil from our sworn enimies. The easiest and most cost effective way to cut electricity costs and carbon emissions is to build your own renewable energy system. This is easier than it sounds.
Building solar panels and/or wind turbines are the easiest and most available ways for the average person to go green with power usage. Of course there are many other can be a bit difficult the first time out. Like anything else - practice makes perfect. Getting the parts required to build solar panels can be a bit difficult if you dont know where to start. This is where many projects fail before they even get off the ground. This too was my dilema, until I bought two guides about “DIY - how to build solar panels”
The first program I tried was Earth4Energy, and the second GreenDIYenergy. Both guides included all the information I wanted to build solar panels, and where to get materials.
I’ve used both guides and I like Earth4energy a little bit more than GreenDIYenergy. E4E offered a bit more for your money and has great customer service. This is the first step I would take in going green around the
house. Energy is where the most money can be saved and has the greatest impact on the enviornment. So get started going green today!

Find Out Why You Should Recycle Paper
June 15, 2010 by ftsword37
Not enough people recycle the paper that they use, which is a real shame because there are many benefits to be had from doing so. What are those benefits? Well, these are some of the main ones…
- As paper is made from trees, the less paper we use the less trees have to be cut down. The effect of cutting down trees is devastating on the environment. Whole ecosystems can come to an end as a result of just part of a forest being cut down. Therefore, recycling paper saves many animals and a lot of plant-life. There is also the visual impact that deforestation to consider. Google the term ‘deforestation’ and see for yourself what a stain excessively cutting down trees leaves on our planet.
- A lot of everyday items (newspapers, Cardboard Boxes, envelopes, egg cartons, paper towels, toilet paper, etc.) can be made from recycled paper. These items do the same job whether they are made from ‘new’ paper or recycled paper, so it makes so no sense to not make them from recycled paper. The problem is we are not recycling enough paper to be able to make these items from only recycled paper.
- Money can be saved in two ways by recycling paper. Firstly, from a manufacturing point of view, it costs much less to turn waste paper into new paper products than it does to turn trees into new paper products. Secondly, as consumers, by buying recycled products we can save money as they nearly always cost less than ones made from virgin pulp. In these harsh economic times, avoiding unnecessary leakage in any part of the economy makes sense.
- Recycled paper products conserve resources and generate less pollution during manufacturing. This is because the fibers have already been processed once. It also reduces solid waste because it takes usable paper out of the waste stream. That means less total energy, water, and chemical use, and lower releases of air and water pollutants.
- Producing recycled paper uses much less total energy than producing virgin paper. Depending on the grade of paper, producing recycled paper may use less purchased energy in the form of fossil fuels and electricity. Pretty much all of the energy that we use damages the environment in one way or another, and so we should save what we can where we can.
Basic Photovoltaic Panel Parts
June 14, 2010 by ftsword37
From the operators of www.GreenLivingRocks.com — providing education regarding how to make a home made solar panel, solar hot water heater, and solar energy facts.
One of the reasons that constructing your own pv (photovoltaic panels has become so popular is that there are really very few components involved. A regular solar panel consists of just a few basic parts, namely an enclosure, solar cells, a substrate and wiring. Here?s an overview of what?s involved.
Solar panel container or enclosure
This is what most people see when they think of a solar panel. It?s the clear glass top, the frame and the backing that the photovoltaic cells are mounted on. The case can be large enough to need a custom built metal rack for mounting on a rooftop, or small enough to be a plastic box that can be placed almost invisibly near an outdoor floodlight. It needs to be resistant to ultra violet (UV) rays so that it does not deteriorate with continuous exposure to sunlight. And the glass (usually Plexiglas) needs to be durable enough to withstand harsh weather, including hail and wind storms that could crash tree branches and other debris into it.
Substrate
This is the piece of lumber, peg board or other material that the solar cells are mounted on inside of the enclosure. It too needs to be UV-resistant to survive prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.
Photovoltaic cells
The photovoltaic cells are comparable to the silicon chips that power most computers. They combine the silicon, metals and other materials in a way that captures direct sunlight and converts it into electricity. The electricity can either be instantly used by direct current devices (DC) like LED lights, or stored in DC batteries and converted into alternating current (AC) to power conventional appliances like refrigerators, TVs and other electrical equipment in homes and businesses.
Tabbed and untabbed solar cells
When constructing your own solar panels, you can save money by purchasing untabbed solar cells and soldering the tabs onto the cells yourself. This can be a good option if you have more time than money, but it?s a tedious job. You can save time by buying tabbed solar cells which will cut your soldering time by one-half to two-thirds.
Photovoltaic cell wiring
Once the solar cells are mounted on the substrate, they are wired to each other in a series so that they can produce electricity. Copper wire is added to connect the solar cells to storage batteries for using the electricity later, or to connect directly to the device that the photovoltaic panel is powering like an attic fan or a solar powered toy.
Blocking diode
The blocking diode is a little component that prevents electricity that is stored in a battery from draining backward into the pv (photovoltaic) panel. Bigger photovoltaic systems use a charge controller for the same effect.
